Wellington & Lower North - Meghan Maloney Photography

Wellington was home to me for nearly fifteen years and I left a big piece of my heart behind when we left. It wasn’t an easy decision to leave, and I love this city with all my heart but the call of family and a more settled climate became stronger as the years went by. This is truly one of the best little cities in the world, and if it wasn’t for the atrocious wind I think the city would probably be twice the size with so many more people wanting to live here. Wellingtonians are a hardy bunch and I think the landscape photography here shows this off – with rocky bays, houses clinging to hillsides and so many vantage points where you can look down over the city.

When shooting in Wellington, you really are spoilt for the choice of seaside locations for both sunsets and sunrises, but you do need to have a sturdy tripod and a warm jacket to ward off that incessant wind most days. Some of my favourite locations to shoot at have been Princess Bay, Petone Pier and foreshore, Oriental Parade and on top of Mount Victoria. And if you are lucky enough to get a bluebird day with no wind in Wellington (which does happen!), then you can count your lucky stars and head out pronto to shoot down at the harbour for stunning reflections of the city in the calm water.
