Photography Experience & Suitability

My workshops are suitable for a range of experience levels, from photographers who have a basic understanding of their camera through to experienced photographers looking to develop their landscape photography further. I keep my workshop groups small so I can provide individual tuition based on your experience and what you’d most like to learn.
I deliberately keep my workshop groups small so there's plenty of opportunity for individual tuition and assistance in the field. Maximum group sizes vary depending on the workshop and location, so you'll find the exact number on each workshop page.
This varies between workshops. Some locations involve only short walks from the vehicle, while others may require walking on uneven terrain or carrying camera equipment for longer distances. Any important fitness or accessibility requirements are outlined in the Before You Book section of each individual workshop page. If you're unsure whether a particular workshop will suit you, please contact me before booking.
There is no upper age limit. The important consideration is whether you're comfortable with the physical requirements and schedule of the particular workshop. Participants under 18 may require a parent or guardian to attend, please contact me before booking.

You'll need a camera that allows you to fully control settings manually, along with suitable lenses, ND filters and a sturdy tripod. The exact equipment recommendations vary depending on the workshop and the types of photography we'll be doing, so you'll find a detailed gear list on each workshop page.
No. Although I photograph with Sony equipment, you're welcome to attend with any camera brand. The principles and techniques I teach apply regardless of the camera system you use, and I am familiar with the settings for Canon, Nikon and many other brands.
For workshops that include post-processing tuition, you'll generally need a laptop with Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop installed. Check the individual workshop page for the requirements of the workshop you're considering.
Tuition is tailored to the locations, conditions and experience of the group, but can include camera settings, composition, working with natural light, filters, long exposures, focusing techniques, exposure bracketing, panoramas and post-processing. Rather than simply taking you to locations, my aim is to help you understand why and how to create landscape photos with visual impact.

Landscape photography is very weather dependent, and interesting weather can often produce some of the best photographic opportunities. I adapt the itinerary around the conditions wherever possible rather than following a rigid schedule. Safety always comes first, and locations or activities may be changed if conditions make the original plan unsuitable.
Sometimes, yes. Landscape photography revolves around the best light, so workshops usually include sunrise and sunset shoots. Workshops involving astrophotography may also include late nights or very early starts. I will always balance the schedule so we're not continually doing extremely long days.
This varies between workshops. Some include accommodation and/or transport while others may require you to arrange your own accommodation. Some meals (breakfast) may also be included on some workshops but not others. Each workshop page clearly lists exactly what's included and what's not included, so please check this before booking.
Meeting locations and required arrival times are shown on each individual workshop page. Depending on the workshop, transport may be available from a nearby airport or meeting point. Please check your particular workshop before arranging flights or other travel.

Your place is secured by paying the deposit specified on the individual workshop page. The remaining balance and payment dates depend on the workshop, and some workshops may offer a payment-plan option and the ability to pay via credit card for an additional fee.

I strongly recommend appropriate travel domestic or international insurance, particularly for multi-day and destination workshops. Your policy should be suitable for your circumstances and ideally cover things such as cancellation, travel disruption and the camera equipment you're taking with you.
